How deep are you suppose to sing into your Mask Area?

When I raise my soft palette and sing high notes my voice sounds like I am on hellium. But just with general chest voice singing are u suppose to really push all your notes into your mask area? Is there a way to adjust the sounds so they don't sound so gremlin like, ha ha.
