Your friend didn't insult you - he insulted hundreds of thousands of mentally challenged people who try to cope the best they can. The word "retarded" has been drummed out of polite conversation the same way "****er" and "ch*nk" have been. It is inapropriate to use that word any more - tell your friend that.
